It sucks!

I'm sick of being told "you can do entertaining storylines without going TV-13," it's a terrible argument. You can do PG storylines on TV-13 shows as well! By going PG you're only limiting yourself.

I've never liked it, but my beliefs have been reaffirmed by this classic clip.

The worst segment on that show, and it would be the most talked about segment if it were done today. We have one of the all-time best rosters right now in terms of in-ring talent and they're being used in long matches every week, but when it comes to characters and storylines the product has never been duller. I want this era back!

Jek

I'm so confused. At first I thought you were taking the piss, then I thought you were being serious, but I'm pretty sure you're taking the piss.

Thee's loads of unique characters on the show. You got guys like Shield and Wyatt's, then you have the Sandow types and the Zeb Colters. I could name loads more but I'll stop there. Also, story lines have been so much better and actually make sense now and have continuity. They're also finally making a tag team division and the World Title takes the place of the IC and US champs as mid/upper card titles.

Mid Card

The fact they are expanding their focus to the mid card and tag scene is a great sign but it seems like they are just pushing people for no real reason and we are expected to care about who wins and who loses but they aren't giving us a reason too. PTP are a prime example. In the scope of the WWE Universe, we have no reasoning for their turn from heel team to face team. Outside that we all know that Darren Young came out as gay but if they don't address it on the shows, we aren't supposed to know or think about that fact. There aren't many storylines for the midcard. I don't think it has to do with the ratings system, just lack of care when it comes to most of the roster.

I'm a little bit taking the piss, but I do hate the PG era.

What you're saying is true, there's a lot of good stuff happening right now. Match quality is way up, light years ahead of the Attitude era's two minute marathons, and the roster in terms of ability has arguably never been better. We have very few 'body guys' and even the average guys are pretty good. Over the last year or so they've even stopped changing storylines and big match finishes just because they were too obvious. They've dropped far fewer storylines and things make a lot more sense because of it. They still lose interest in certain guys (sorry Ryback) but not as much as they have in the past.

But they haven't made one positive change that couldn't have been made in a TV-13 environment. The product as it is now could still exist, unchanged, in a TV-13 world, only more options would be available. They could do all the good they've been doing, plus more!

I'm all for cutting back on blood, but there are matches once or twice a year that would benefit hugely from it. Hell In A Cell has died over the last six or seven years because no one bleeds and because nothing hardcore happens. More than one cell match has been wrestled almost entirely inside the ring. There's a big difference between banning blood and just cutting back on blood.

Same goes for hardcore matches. The world has changed a lot over the last decade, concussions are taken a lot more seriously (getting hit in the head isn't a good thing, who knew?) and wrestling has adapted across the world because of it. TNA banned chair shots too and do far fewer ladder and ultimate X matches than they did before. They haven't done a monster's ball in years. Japan is still hard hitting but even their chair shots are to the back now. Not sure about smaller promotions, I'm guessing CZW is still CZW, but for the most part hardcore is dead. I hate that. Piledrivers are among the safest moves you can do, if you do them right. No one takes a bump! I see nothing wrong with guys doing "dangerous" moves if they're able to do them safely.

And on that note, I'm a massive Jeff Hardy fan and I know he's hurting a lot these days. That sucks. But would I give up TLC for the sake of his knees? Hell no! He didn't have to do that stuff if he didn't want to, but he did and I loved it! I would be the first to complain if Vince started telling guys to "go out there and break every table, fall off every ladder and dent every chair or you're fired," but there's a middle ground. If a guy wants to take a big ladder bump, let him take it! Make it as safe as you can, but don't cut these awesome moments out of wrestling. MITB is a highlight of the year because of those ladder matches, we need more of that, not less.

The divas these days are shit. Again, some of them are pretty good in the ring, but no one wants to see them because there's nothing to them. I didn't enjoy bra and panties matches and the Miller Lite girls had no place on WrestleMania XIX, but again, there's a compromise to be made. There's nothing wrong with what Trish Stratus and Lita did. They showed off the puppies and then wrestled hard. I have no problem with this. Is Natalya going to be remembered for anything in 10 years? She's arguably better than both Trish and Lita, but she's not half the legend they are.

Jerry Lawler is a joke these days, and not a funny one. Some people need to use a certain level of language to do their jobs well. Imagine telling Chris Rock that he can't say "motherfucker" or mention race anymore. His whole act would die. Lawler may as well have had his balls cut off when they told him to stop mentioning puppies. Punk still likes to push the boundaries, and it's great when he does. He gets censored but we all know what he's saying. That's fine. I hate censorship too, but TV has rules. If Damien Sandow wants to say "posterior" instead of "ass," that's great, but these are grown men and they're supposed to hate each other. How many fights outside pubs have you ever seen where no one swears? Hell, how many arguments have you hear where no one swears? It rarely happens.

Again, the big argument I hear over and over is that "you can tell good stories in a PG setting, just look at Disney!" That's true, but you can also tell great stories in an adult setting, just look at Die Hard. Plus you can air Disney films at midnight on Spike, TV-13 doesn't mean everything has to have forced bad language or sex appeal, it just means you can use it when it works.

Saying you don't need TV-13 to tell a good story is like saying you don't need sugar in tea. Of course you don't need it, but tea is so much better with sugar.

Mid Card

I agree for the most part but I am sticking to the idea that its a lack of creativity on the creative teams part. They are just throwing matches together and I'm not sure what the purpose is. I say "Fuck" a lot because sometimes you just can't express a certain level of emotion without letting a 4 letter bomb fly. It's not completely necessary but in a sense it is. I mean look at D-Bry. He has taken a beating for the last two weeks. He can't just come out and say "I'm really mad!!!" That's not believable.

The Blue Print

Didn't really know where to put this, but Pro Wrestling isn't even worth watching now days it seems. Both of the main stream companies just don't seem to get it. Or maybe I dont? But I was listening to shoot interview from Harry Smith talking about all the WWE's stupid rules.. some of them are just silly. I guess with all the cooperate sponsors of wrestling, its hard to really do what you want to do when you are a booker, but cmon man..
