Daniel Bryan: My best WWE matches were with Punk

A few excerpts from an interview DirecTV did with WWE superstar Daniel Bryan:

Q: Who would you say has given you your best matches in WWE?
DB: I’ve had some really great matches with CM Punk and I’ve had some really fun, physical, brutal matches with Sheamus. I’ve also really enjoyed wrestling The Shield.

Q: You and CM Punk first met in your early indie wrestling days, correct?
DB: Yeah, It was 2003 or 2004. I wrestled CM Punk for 45 minutes in front of 30 people in Florida. We’ve known each other a long time.

Q: Can you talk a bit more about your relationship?
DB: It’s interesting because CM Punk and I have a lot in common personally, yet we are very different. He is very brash and kind of says whatever he feels. I’m more laid back and not the most outgoing person. But we have a certain respect for each other. I have been on shows that Punk drove 14 or 15 hours for from Chicago to get paid 100 bucks. We’ve done those shows in front of 30 people together. It’s a long road for guys like us to get here. I’m always astounded. There was that December PPV when I had cashed in my Money in the Bank contract to beat Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship and Punk had retained his WWE title that same night. We used to work on the indies together and then there we were, both champions. No one really thought we could do it. It’s very cool and surreal.

Q: Who were your idols coming up?
DB: I loved Dean Melenko and Eddie Guererro. Bret Hart was always one of my favorites. I’m also a big Seahawks fan and the guy who I really loved was a wide receiver named Steve Largent, who ended up being a politician in Oklahoma. He was always so respectable and was never about himself, he was about the team. A lot of people like the brash players but I like people who focus on the team and downplay what they do.

Just an interview he did, giving us some insight on his relationship with CM Punk. Nothing new really but I was a little surprised Sheamus was named in his top matches.

Mad to think that some people thought (myself included) Punk and Bryan would never be huge stars in the WWE. Not because of their lack of ability (because they had it in abundance) but just because how difficult it is to break into WWE from the indies.

Jek

I work in Argos and the Daniel Bryan and CM Punk toys are always sold out first with the Cena shit, it made me happy seeing kids like them that much which was a bit of suprise. No one thought these ROH guys would make it, they were some of the pioneers of the attitude WWE has towards smaller guys and especially guys from indys. Which paved the way for a lot of guys I reckon. It kind of makes me wish Samoa Joe went to WWE though.

Yeah, he's in the New Main Event Mafia. Which is actually probably the best stable TNA has had in a very very long time. Every member has a purpose and every member benefits from it.

Joe giving the stink face would just be all kinds of wrong.....

DB just seems like an approachable Cm punk. I can see him being a cool guy and he obviously respects the business and deserves everything he's getting right now.

I've been a fan of d-bry since i saw him on nxt.

I don't get to watch indies, so nxt was the first i saw of him.

He's really made a great transition from wrestler to sports entertainer... and that's usually not a good thing, but it is with him.

Great stuff.

He's been able to keep most of his style while adapting just enough to be wwe friendly. He and punk are the best of both worlds.
