The new star of Doctor Who will be revealed in a special live programme on Sunday, the BBC has announced.

The half-hour show, presented by Zoe Ball, will feature an interview with the new lead, as well as 11th Doctor Matt Smith and executive producer Steven Moffat.

"The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," Moffat said.

"For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, is on BBC One at 7pm on 4 August.

According to the official announcement, Ball "will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the Tardis".

Smith, who has played the Time Lord since 2010, announced in June that he would be bowing out in this year's Christmas special.

The announcement sparked much speculation about who might take over, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw among the bookies' favourites.

Ben Stephenson, BBC drama controller, said: "Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we've been using the codename Houdini as a decoy.

"It's the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation."

Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary on 23 November with a special episode, starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt as the Doctor.

Billie Piper will return as Rose Tyler, while Jenna Coleman will continue as Clara Oswald.

The episode will also see the return of the Daleks and the Zygons

I hope the new Doctor is black or a woman, maybe a black woman? That would be perfect.

I hope the 12th Doctor is different from 10 and 11.  I don't want another loud goof like them two.  Being eccentric doesn't mean slapstick and shouting a lot.  Somehow I've got the feeling he will be though.

Do any of the Who fans here listen to the Big Finish audio dramas?  I've been listening to some of the 8th Doctor ones with Paul McGann, and I love 'em!  I actually prefer them to the current series on BBC to be honest.  They're far more mature, and just overall decent sci-fi.  They know the kids won't be listening to them, so they can be a bit darker and have some fun historical nods.

Gotta stay as a white male. No point changing it for the sake of changing it.

I'd love it if it was an older guy.

I wouldn't mind a black Doctor, just as long as the actor was chosen on merit rather than because he's black.  The same principle as a white Doctor really, as long as it's on merit rather than because he's white.  The Doctor has to stay male though.  As far as I'm aware, Time Lords and Time Ladies don't change gender (The Curse of Fatal Death doesn't count 😋 ).

I'd love an older Doctor again, and a Doctor that doesn't fall in love with his companions or companions that don't fall in love with him.  Rowan Atkinson would be amazing 🙂.  I was a bit annoyed when they cast Richard E. Grant as the Great Intelligence lately, I was holding out some hope he would be an official Doctor one day!

Almost God like? Maybe...

Peter Capaldi would be fantastic, but I don't think he would take the job an a long term basis.  It'll be Ben Whishaw.  The interview stuff will be pointless, and most people will switch off straight after the reveal, especially if it's another unknown actor/actress.

Ecclestone (9th) was a great doctor. They changed him too soon.

Ecclestone wanted to leave though, like all of the new ones.

Yea, Benji is right. Ecclestone didn't want to be typecast so left after one series.  Was a shame as I thought his darker Dr was really watchable.

Was talking to Belly when it was being announced.  I think he'll be a much darker Dr, very much like Ecclestone was and Tennant almost was a the end of one of his series.  I hope he stays for a while, and we get a more adult feel to the next series, as the last few have really been aimed at kids (especially the last series).

Anyone else catch that in World War Z he is listed on the cast list as "WHO Doctor"...

Been looking at how busy he is, and he is in a series called The Musketeers, and is playing Cardinal Richelieu, which is a major part in the musketeer story.

He's also slated to be in Driven, altho there are no real details yet.

Matt Smith also had other roles during his run, but nothing high profile.

From looking at the cast list of The Musketeers, Capaldi looks to be the biggest star, so might be a conflict there?  Really hope he's a long term Dr, and not just a one season stop gap...

I'm happy with it. I was hoping that they'd cast an older guy as he can't keep getting younger. Fans of the old series seemed to want an older guy in the role so hopefully most people will be happy with the appointment.

That's because it's a kids show.
