Kick It Out Chief: Diversify Your Clubs

Clubs should consider employing a minority candidate when it comes to choosing between two with similar qualifications, the director of an anti-discrimination body has said.

Kick It Out's Roisin Wood told BBC Sport that football in Britain would benefit from "diversification".

"It's about positive action," she said.

"When it comes down to the final two equally qualified candidates, then it's about looking where your levels of under-representation are at the club."

Wood, who was appointed director in 2012, added: "I know positive discrimination is illegal but positive action is lawful  and should be looked at when it comes to diversification in football.

"We are behind [when it come to diversity]. We lack representation in football at higher levels in these communities [ethnic minorities, women and those with disabilities]."

Wood added that the Football Association was one football organisation that was making an effort to change the perception of "old boys' club" at administration level, with Kelly Simmons (director of the National Game and women's football) and Heather Rabatts (director)  both handed senior positions in the past two years. However, the Kick It Out chief said the change in football was not happening "fast enough".

In April, Football League chairman Greg Clarke met the Professional Footballers' Association and agreed to discuss new measures aimed at increasing the number of ethnic minority managers at the league's 72 clubs.

They included having a 30-strong list of qualified black and other minority managers ready to take up a vacant position. Fifty percent of clubs in the League will have to vote in favour of the proposals for them to come into effect.
Norwich City boss Chris Hughton is currently the only black manager in the Premier League.

When asked about the number of black managers in British football, Wood added: "It's disproportionate when you take into account there are 30% of non-white players in the professional game.

"But we have to look at the diversification in the whole of football though. We also need to get women and those with disabilities in higher levels.

"Clubs shouldn't do it because it's morally right, but they should do it as a business case - people want to work in a diverse workplace."

As part of its campaign to combat abuse at football grounds, Kick It Out has launched an app  so fans can report incidents of discrimination.

"Some fans have no problem approaching stewards on the day, but for others this is a really easy way to report abuse without maybe drawing attention to yourself," said Wood.

This is so ridiculous. Do they really think the reason there's only one black manager in the Premier League is because the big bosses are racist? In this day and age, no-one is going to pick a white guy over a black guy just cos he's white.

It's really just a coincidence, a combination of not enough black people compared to white people applying for the jobs and due to that, there being more white qualified than black qualified. If you got a full list of black and white managers, white managers would be a much bigger list so obviously there's gonna be more white managers in the Leagues.

Surely, no-one actually thinks that this is really an issue?

To me, it just seems like their fishing for publicity.

Things like this make me laugh. The best person for the job should get the job. People shouldn't be getting interviews or jobs over better qualified people just because they're black, a woman or have a disability. If they're good enough then they'll do fine.

When more black guys start going into management I'm sure we'll see a rise in black managers. But honestly, how many black players do you hear talking about going into management when they retire? None? Yet guys like Owen, Giggs, the Nevilles, Shearer etc discuss it and go into coaching or train to be a manager. It's not a racism thing, it's clearly that the white players are the ones going for it.

Who gives a shit if Hughton is the only black manager in the Premiership? Can anyone name a decent black manager that hasn't retired? No, I didn't think so.

It's not racism... it's simply that there's no black manager that's good enough. When some good ones step forward I'm sure we'll see more. They have to be good enough and step up on their own accord though, you can't force teams to interview people just because they're black.

Better than Essa

It's also a lot to with the old timers never moving on. Once you've managed a club, you're in the system and just get moved around. Even the worst managers never really drop below the Championship. Big clubs take proven managers, new guys have to start at the bottom.

Jek

Racism isn't as simple as you guys make it out as. The reason I believe there is only one black manager in the PL is because A) most managers in the PL are old by our standards, back when they were getting their badges the country wasn't as acceptable as it is now and B) beause a lot of the top flight managers today come from European countries who either don't have a large black population or they were the best of the batch.

I'm sure it'll be different in 15-20 years though.
