Freeview

Does anyone actually use Freeview, or are you all Sky guys? I've been with Sky for years, but their bills are getting insane. I don't even bother with sports or films, but I'm paying over £50 and I really don't watch enough outside of what Freeview is offering for it to be worthwhile. I could get a Freeview box (or possibly have it built into the TV, not sure) and a better internet provider for half the price.

But is it actually any good? If I have to get a box, I'm totally lost. They're not all standard like Sky's are, everyone makes them, and who has the best Freeview box isn't a conversation people have.

Soooo, tell me what you know.

Almost God like? Maybe...

I use Sky.

But if you do get a freeview box, I'd advise spending a bit and getting one that records one channel whilst you watch another and all that kind of stuff Sky gives you.

I'm a freeview guy, but only because since moving back to Cardiff and getting my own place about 2 years ago I haven't been able to afford Sky.  I do miss it!

Most TVs come with freeview already built in.  So if you've got a new (or even new-ish, my TV's about 5-6 years old and it's got a freeview built in) TV, chances are you might be able to pick up a freeview signal already.  And I don't think it matters much about which box you use, as long as you can get a decent signal.

Freeview's alright I suppose.  The only wresting you get is TNA on Challenge, so unless you download you'll miss out on the 'E.

There's Freeview plus which lets you pick up more channels, like UK Gold (or whatever it calls itself these days).  You gotta pay for that though, not sure how much.

Yeah, I'd definitely need a recorder box. Most of the boxes have that though, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Missing WWE is fine too, I stream everything anyway. I pay £50+ for Sky as it is, I'm not adding another £20 for Sky Sports!

I've got Virgin. Got Sky Sports too, because my computer is SO shit that despite my great internet, I can't load any sort of video/streaming.

Freeview is very basic. It's alright if you're desperate or just don't want to waste a ton of money on TV every month but I feel all the best stuff is not included and I like the best stuff. 😋 I can only watch BBC One and itv for so long.

This is the thing. I can't think of much at all that I'd miss from Sky, but I just know if I leave that there will be something I forgot about. I get all the big TV series on torrents because I don't want to wait, which leaves...pretty much just EastEnders.

What do you watch on Virgin that you can't get on Freeview? Maybe I'm forgetting.

Sky One, Living, Discovery, all the stuff you get on Sky probably.

I'm not even sure what Sky One has now Stargate is over. Endless Simpsons repeats I guess. Oh, Mad Dogs. That's pretty good.

Yeah, see if you can find it anywhere. You'd probably quite like it.

I'll have to invest in a recorder box.  I work 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. and don't get in the house until 11:30 p.m. (yes, it takes an hour 1/2 to get home from work, stupid Newport and the buses!) so I don't watch any T.V., apart from the Corrie repeats on ITV2 at lunch time.  I miss being able to watch stuff.

Any recommendations for a recorder box?

Jek

Really if you torrent theres not point of having a set top box, we haven't had one since we got rid of Virgin years ago. I just have my pc connected to the TV and whatever I don't stream is available somewhere online.

Trains between Newport and Cardiff can't be that bad, it only takes an hour or so to get to Cardiff from Bristol. Why are you using buses?

Trains are better, but it's easier and less hassle to use the buses.  I get the bus from my house into Cardiff town.  That bus is every 10 minutes and it's only 15 mins. then into Cardiff.  Then the bus from Cardiff into Newport.  Now my work isn't in Newport town itself.  It's outside the town and 'round the corner from Tredegar House and the Stats Office, and quite in the middle of nowhere (stupid Ministry of Justice choosing an obscure location).  However, the bus from Cardiff to Newport does stop directly outside work.

Now with the train, I can get a train/bus from my house into Cardiff.  Then train from Cardiff into Newport.  Then another bus from Newport back outside the main town towards work.

Damn, I wish I had enough money for driving lessons, then enough money to own and run a car!!

The other alternative is to find a new job, which I am doing!  I do really need a job in Cardiff.  Or gatecrash your neck of the woods and work in Bristol.  That's just train/bus into Cardiff town then train to Bristol, as long as it's in the town itself!

City. How very dare you.

I have a friend who lives right near me but commutes to Cardiff every day by train. He says it's a total pain and takes a good hour or so, but it still sounds better than the bus option. Although you're right, to Cardiff centre it'd be fine, but to some outer edge place probably not so much.

Yeah, come work here. The flat two doors up from me is to let right now, you'll just have to find four students to live with and you're sorted!
