Wrestlers Keep Getting Older

So I just watched the Royal Rumble show and keep getting amazed at how old everyone is. Even young bucks like Riddle don't even break into the main roster until they're in their mid-30s, while others like Lashley, Styles, Mysterio, Morrison, Hardy, Ziggler and others are still at peak physical condition at 40+.

I'm 32 right now and there were only three mens rumble entrants younger than me, and one is Ricochet who is only younger than me by a couple months. Only Dominik Mysterio and Otis are under 30.

Remember back when wrestlers like Cena, Lesnar and Orton  could enter the main event in their early 20s? Remember when Michaels retiring at 33 and Austin at 38 didn't seem that unreasonable? Seems like a different sport.

Here s a list of the 34 men who wrestled on last night's show, arranged in order of age.

Goldberg: 54
Kane: 53
Edge: 47
Christian: 47
Hurricane: 46
Rey Mysterio: 46
Lashley: 44
Jeff Hardy: 43
AJ Styles: 43
Sheamus: 43
Carlito: 41
John Morrison: 41
Randy Orton: 40
Dolph Ziggler: 40
Shinsuke Nakamura: 40
Miz: 40
Cesaro: 40
Daniel Bryan: 39
Damien Priest: 38
Braun Strowman: 37
Kevin Owens: 36
Sami Zayn: 36
Baron Corbin: 36
Roman Reigns: 35
Drew McIntyre: 35
Matt Riddle: 35
Mustafa Ali: 34
Xavier Woods: 34
Big E: 34
Seth Rollins: 34
Elias: 33
Ricochet: 32
Otis: 29
Dominik Mysterio: 23

17 of them are aged 40 or higher. 40 is now the average age of wrestlers in a WWE PPV. The oldest woman on last night's show was Victoria who is 49 and would have been the third oldest if I had included the women on this list.

It's not really surprising. WWE have failed to consistently make stars the past decade and this is the result.

Sheamus is 43?! Lashley 44? They're both older than I thought they were. Although I shouldn't be that surprised as they've been around a while now.

Really does show how poorly they've done in building up new talent in recent years.

My point isn't really that they haven't been making new stars, my point is that wrestlers don't even get a chance to be a big star until they've been in the game for a really long time. Guys like Matt Riddle and Keith Lee are newcomers to the big leagues, and they are both 35/36.

Yeah but my point was the reason why newcomers are so old is because they didn’t create new stars for a decade basically. Now they are playing catch up. They have people like Dunne and Bate and others who are amazing, in their twenties and will not doubt be huge in the future.

In relation to this, WWE have just basically changed their performance centre threshold. Except in rare circumstances, they will not accept anyone above the age of 30.

That's a good move. If you're not at a good standard by your 30s, then what's the point? Should be for the younger guys to learn and be built up.
