TNA's 6-sided Ring

On 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff, he talked about discontinuing TNA's 6-sided ring. Here's what he had to say.

"It was stupid. Here is the logic I heard. When people flip through the channels, people are going to stop and say hey, what's that. That was the entire psychology and strategy behind the 6-sided ring. First of all, people don't click through channels, even in 2010...I was very vocal about it. I pissed off 75 or 80% of the people in the TNA office because, of course, they thought they were the greatest thing in the world since sliced bread because they had no point of reference. None of them ever been in the wrestling business before. None of them really knew anything about the wrestling business. They were not really interested in the wrestling business. They were just interested in being popular in Nashville in certain pockets of the business community...I asked them how does the 6-sided ring change the performance in the ring? What does the 6-sided ring mean? What is the statement it makes? How does it make the product more interesting to watch? The answer was...crickets, they didn't have one."

Did anyone actually like that ring? I always thought it looked quite awkward for the wrestlers at times. It's one of those things that didn't need to be changed from the standard 4-sided ring... just seemed like a "look at how different we are" kinda thing and that's it.

Mid Card

I think it could have provided some fun ideas but it always looked small

The best thing they did was remove it. They did it for publicity and nothing more. There's a reason that no other wrestling company has moved on from the standard wrestling ring, it's stupid otherwise and gives more chance for someone getting hurt.

I've heard a lot of wrestlers at the time say that they hated it as well, citing that it made certain moves harder and put them more at risk of injury.

TNA did a fan poll at one point and the fans voted to bring it back. Never saw how many people actually voted, but the result was still surprising. Even when I liked TNA, the 6-sided ring was awful. I couldn't imagine any new fans tuning in and liking it, which probably didn't help their prospects. What didn't help is as mentioned above, quite a lot of wrestlers didn't like it and they went with a fan poll instead of what their wrestlers wanted, and wanting a normal wrestling ring isn't being unreasonable.

I dunno, I actually liked the 6 sided ring, was something different form a visual perspective. Though if the wrestlers themselves didn't feel working in that ring then fair enough for getting rid of it.

I liked it at first from a visual perspective, but that wore off pretty quick. It made the whole thing look smaller as well, which really put me off once I noticed that.
