Mid Card

Hey everyone,

For the first time, I'm in a situation where I can finally learn how to drive.  Circumstances and finances have meant that I haven't been in a position to before, but now all the stars and planets have aligned, and the time's right for me to learn.  And I'm actually pretty excited about it, more so than I thought I would be!  And I feel ready to drive too, being 28 I guess!

I haven't booked any lessons yet as I need to sort out my provisional licence.  I'll do that on the weekend, then I can start looking around.  But in the meantime, I want to do some research for the future, which is where this thread comes into play.  Now I'm not much of a car guy.  In fact I'm not a car guy at all.  I don't know anything about them.  Well I know the different manufacturers and some models, but by and large I don't know much.  So I thought I'd ask you guys for advice and recommendations for what car I should look for once (positive mental attitude, so no ifs!!!) I've passed.

Here're some things to keep in mind:
- I live in a city, so big 4x4s aren't really necessary
- I'm single with no kids, so no need to think about the family
- I'm single, so maybe something with a bit of flash if it's not too expensive 😉

Thanks everyone!!

I've been learning to drive. I take my test in little over a month. I've been thinking on a classic Smart Car. Nice and small, don't skimp on the power like you'd think and covers what you require.

I'll ask the wife.... ;-)

But I know that she'll say to look for German or Japanese cars, as they are the most reliable, and for the most part, flashiness comes pre installed! :-P

The Blue Print

I dont know what y'all got over there. I drive an 08 Ford Tarus. But the thing I have learned about cars, is everyone will always tell you something different on what is the best. Or how to fix something. Just do a lot of test driving with them. I dont know much about the manufacturers either though. Im not a car guy. But i'd go with flash since you are single Compy 😉 Get a Porsche

Every family ;-)

But as Compy doesn't have one yet, I'd go for something of an M3 or M5 nature! :-D

The first thing you need to do is put your details into the comparison sites and see how much the car insurance will be. New drivers are going to have higher premiums, so check how much that's going to cut into your budget. With your age, you may get away with not paying the ridiculous prices a 17 year old would if they had just passed their test.

The next thing would be road tax. Standard road tax on a 1.2 litre car is £130. The higher the engine size, the more you pay.  There a whole host of energy efficient cars out there now where you can be between 0 & £30 a year for tax. Take a look at Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI, Toyota Yaris 1.4 D, Mazda 2 1.4 TD & Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCI.

I have two toyota yaris' for the company. They run on sunshine and happy thoughts. Not had anything serious maintenance wise and they are over 200,00km.
