The Purge

So I saw The Purge recently the movie was decent, but the concept left many ideas open for Sequels or Spin-Offs or just other stories in general.

In case you don't know the underlying concept of the movie is:

The government decides, in an effort to eradicate crime, for a 12 hour period, all crimes are legal (barring very very heinous crimes, like terrorism, or assassination of a government official). So you can kill, steal, rape, home invade.

Now here's my idea for you:

If that was your premise for a movie, the 12 hour period during the Purge, where everything is legal, what would you do?

Once a man would spend a week patiently waiting if he missed a stage coach, but now he rages if he misses the first section of a revolving door.

Loot. Everyone would loot. The film would be one long series of people raiding the Apple store. Why would anyone murder when you could steal things you want?

People don't kill and rape because they really want to do it "just this one time" and then it'll be out of their systems. It's a stupid concept, mass crime to eliminate crime. Like a massive drinking binge to stop binge drinking. It'll stop it for the next day while everyone is hungover - or in this case playing with their new iPhones - but the day after that? People will get right back on it.

I know this film was the top of the US Box Office but it only got to something like Number 7 in the UK...

I don't really buy the premise of the film, like Chucky just went into, How could you justify murder as being allowed but terrorism as not being allowed, because surely that is just classed as mass murder etc, you wouldn't have to call it terrorism, just say you got a bit over excited.. the same with killing a government official.. Why is alright to rape the lady down the street but not the government official just because they have different job titles?

What chucky is describing sounds more like the London Riots though haha, targeting the Apple stores haha...

The point is, this is done by the government to satiate the innate feeling of anger that people have for a 12 hour period every year. Here's a brief quote for Wiki about the rules:

" "The Purge" during which all criminal activity, including murder, becomes legal. The only rules during The Purge are that "Level 10" government officials must remain unharmed and usage of weaponry above "Class 4" is forbidden. The Purge is designed to act as a catharsis for the American people, so that they may vent all negative emotions however they desire."

It takes place about 10 years into the future, and it's considered like a "holiday" people throw Purge Parties and stuff like that, but also a lot of places install HUGE security systems to protect themselves JUST during the Purge.

Once a man would spend a week patiently waiting if he missed a stage coach, but now he rages if he misses the first section of a revolving door.

That's my point, it's only cathartic for a very short time. Giving people the chance to do these things will only make them more likely to do it again, not less. No one feels like they need to kill someone just once, just to try it.

I can tell you that, not no one, because there are a ton of things I don't do only because of the legal ramifications that will come with it.

How many people do you know who don't do things purely because they are illegal?

I saw it too.  Great idea, but predictable movie.

Frankly, I feel the Purge COULD work (in the movie, take it with a grain of salt) if they explained how the legal system was for lack of a better word, simplified?

Basically, if there was some Judge Dredd type system or more eye for an eye, strict, harsh punishments and the like, crime would be deterred.  The world would be sharply different, I imagine.

Of course, the movie explained none of that.  It just kinda threw it out there like life is just like today, except for the Purge.  Fail.

Sure, but murder? Rape? Not a chance. Looting, absolutely! Speeding, maybe even a little GBH if you hate someone that much, but nothing beyond that.

Almost God like? Maybe...

I agree with chuckles here (feel dirty now) i dont think most people want to kill and rape, and so most wouldnt. But people would loot and steal like crazy. Car crime would go thru the roof!

People would rape, and it'd be that hot girl you know or see sometimes and you know you'd never get the chance with her but you really want to fuck her. It'd happen. Not everyone would, as some people would still have some standards... but some people would just to say that they had sex with that fit girl they know.

It would be the one night of the year where the Ugly girls would be thankful of it haha

The pretty girls boyfriends will be the ones killed too get to the pretty girl... there we have Murder and Rape all in one...

Id hope the diamond stores and car showrooms would have excellent security and employing 100 guards with shotguns haha who could then of course turn around and steal from the place they were being hired to protect.. oh the ramifications haha

The Blue Print

I went to see this movie in theaters and it just disappointed me. They could have done so much more with it because the concept of the movie was fun. Maybe I hyped myself up for this movie way to much, because I never go see movies in the theater, so when I do its supposed to be a big deal for me!! But nope this fell flat. The only interesting character was the main evil blonde guy.

Agreed!  Blondie was the only one with any substance.  I saw a matinee showing of it.  I would have really been pissed if I had payed the normal double price afterwards.

Also, I know of (not my friends) people that would do crazy shit if they could.  It's a sad world out there.
