How is the Diva Revolution going so far?

An anonymous veteran wrestler who is considered very respected within the industry when it comes to analyzing matches, noticed several interesting things about the current "Diva Revolution" in WWE.

One of the problems is that the women get worse in the ring on the main roster because three nights a week they are doing five-to-eight minute multiple-person matches, which means they generally do a couple of their regular spots and moves, as opposed to actually "working."

He also noted that because Team Bella flip-flops from heel to babyface so often, it's hard for a fresh new act like Sasha Banks to get over in a match working with someone like Nikki Bella as the established act that is supposed to help get her over to the main roster audience.

Finally, the person saw what was basically a promo from Becky Lynch and Charlotte on Twitter, and noted that it was a considerable amount better than their RAW promos because they were just being themselves.

The point with doing lots of multiple tag matches is a good one. It's no way to built a good ladies division, just having two singles women matches on Raw would be a massive improvement... it's not like there's not enough time on Raw these days for it. 5-8 minutes each in singles matches where the girls can give fans a glimpse of what they can actually do. Built up the division. At the moment I still have no interest in them, even though there are now some very talented women on the main roster.

What does everyone else think? Anything that they need to do to built up the whole "divas revolution" any more than what WWE are currently doing? Is what they're doing working for you?

I think people are complaining about nothing. Sure, the divas revolution isn't perfect - anyone who expected it to be are just stupid. Since when has WWE done anything perfectly? But the point is, WWE see divas in a better light than they did six months ago. WWE divas are getting longer matches, more mic time, and are not being completely ignored by commentators like they were during their matches before.

The whole point of the revolution was to make the divas a bigger and more integral part of the show - and it's being done. It can always get better - of course it can - but the same can be said for any part of a WWE show, including the main event.

I'd be happy just with some more singles matches. Would keep things fresh for a bit and would allow for more than one story at a time. Tired of tag matches with them, and don't think that we need to have three groups either. Hopefully this is just the start and soon enough they'll all be split up (apart from the Bella's of course as that was awful last time they split them) and move onto singles feuds that fans can get in to.

It's cool that they've brought women up to the main roster who can actually wrestle though. Totally different scene from a few years ago where the majority of women were there to just look nice and produce some of the shittest wrestling I've seen... now they're there to look nice and put on good wrestling matches.

Fans aren't helping though cheering for Lesnar and all that though womens matches, even if it was his home town. Guess not everyone wants women to have more of a role, even though this is the best batch of female wrestlers that WWE have had that I can recall. Part of me does think that's down to constant tag matches with them though... get's boring after a while.

I think all the tag team matches will die down a little after the SummerSlam match takes place. It's all just leading to the 3 v 3 v 3 elimination, so it's kind of understandable why they did that.

The fans chanting other things during the matches I'm sure will die down when they get used to the divas being a bigger part of the show. It'll take time for the fans to adjust but I think a few years down the line, people will be genuinely excited to see divas PPV matches on a regular basis and hopefully it might even be commonplace to have two womens matches if the story and timing calls for it.

WWE Hall of Famer Greg "The Hammer" Valentine recently appeared on Filsinger Games' The View podcast and made some very controversial statement regarding women's wrestling. Valentine cut right to the chase:

“As far as girl wrestling, I would send them all out to the strip bar and fire ’em.”

“I’d fire every girl wrestler I ever saw. They don’t draw any money, they have horrible matches. Uh … they’re terrible. That’s the way I feel.” “They take away jobs from men that need to support their families. They should be home washing dishes and cooking and pregnant and barefoot.”

The male host responded, "Here we go.." and added that this was a perfect heel interview. Valentine continued:

“I love women … but they gotta realize their place. They’re not supposed to be wrestlers. They’re not supposed to be MMA fighters or boxers. It’s bullshit.”

Wow... there's someone that doesn't appreciate the Diva's Revolution. Can imagine him getting a lot of hate directed towards him for these comments, especially from women.

sounds to me like he's trying to get himself back in the limelight... I mean, I wasn't even aware he was still alive! It seems a lot of these old guys (who aren't in with the WWE) will try anything these days to gain notoriety again. Especially if their character was predominantly heel.

Valentine is still working indy shows he just had a match here in a local fed... i was shocked to see he was actually on the card.

The divas stuff i don't really care either way.... raw is long and boring i'm sure the fans began to become bored and likely would have chanted for Lesnar for almost anyone who was in the ring at that point.... and it's not like Nikki Bella is suddenly going to look like a billion dollars because she is working banks.... it wasn't a very good match and i think it's just what it is.... nobody is going to totally buy into divas main events and all that... it worked one time years ago and it was probably just a shot in the dark when they booked that.

Also all these stables they have now is just watering it down.... probably not a popular opinion but that's what i'm thinking.

Greg Valentine should watch Sasha vs Bayley from tonight's NXT Takeover and then try and say they don't belong.

The divas pulled off match of the night.

Yet another tag match on Raw and the fans showed their displeasure. So soon after seeing what they can do at NXT Takeover as well... just let them have some good singles matches WWE! No one cares for constant divas tag matches any more!

There's been pretty much the same singles and tag matches.  See chux's post.  I just think the crowd were starting to get burned out after three nights of wrestling.

I think the tag teams should take a back seat for more singles matches though and I can see Nikki vs Charlotte vs Sasha for the title at NoC.

Yeah but even in the singles matches it's not really been singles matches as there's usually more than the 2 people out there. They'd be better off dissolving the three crappy factions they have and just have heels and faces. No groups (or just one or two with two people in them) and leave it at that. Then we can get good matches and feuds that people care about. No one cares about the current feud which already seems never ending because it involves practically all the female wrestlers on the main roster.

I gotta say i'm not really into this multi faction stuff.... i think i'm with Ben on this one and think they should all be split up.

Mike Foley put on his Facebook yesterday something that a friend of his said which sums it up perfectly, except I'm not sure on a divas tag title.

"The Divas division now has to consist of independent concurrent story lines. The WWE Universe wants to see a fight. Grudge matches. One versus one. Leave your entourage in the back. That is a big match feel. Not contrived weekly variations of all the Divas put together for a couple of segments. They need a WORLD Championship. And, a WORLD Tag Team Championship. This is why the Barclays trolled their Raw match. Their Summerslam Elimination match didn't allow for the opportunity for the final-two-competitors pop. Big difference between those two examples and Saturday night. Frankly, The Sasha/Bayley pre-match video package gave me more chills. I don't know if Sara del Rey works with the main roster Divas, but she should."

Foley's right. Del Rey should be active on the WWE roster though, not just working with the divas. Del Rey is good enough to run that division.

And yeah, the SummerSlam elimination match would have went alot better under Survivor Series elimination ala individual not team eliminations.

The problem is that we're being told how revolutionary the division is, but it's the same as it's ever been. Meanwhile on NXT they don't try to brand or market the division as anything special, but they book it a work it differently so it is something special. They don't seem to understand the difference, just saying something doesn't make it true.

Two nights before those same fans saw Sasha and Bayley work an excellent match, and then they have to sit through a boring six diva tag that went nearly 15 minutes. Of course they're going to chant that they want Sasha. I'm surprised they didn't demand Bayley too.

WWE keeps pushing this as a big change, like female athletes have never existed before, and that we're seeing something drastically different than we had even two months ago. That's just not true. The matches are longer now, that's literally it. They're no better than they were before, two thirds of the women involved have been around for years, they're even still called divas instead of women. They've learned exactly nothing from what makes the NXT division so good.

Does anyone else think there's something odd about Charlotte? Don't know what it is though. I thought it was because she looks tall, but I saw her standing next to some of the others at SummerSlam and she doesn't seem that much taller than them so maybe it's not that. Just can't put my finger on it.

"Before I get into my thoughts on what they are doing let me first state that I am a big fan and supporter of women's wrestling and have a great deal of respect for many of the women involved in the "Divas revolution". For the most part I think the Divas Revolution is being screwed and unless they change the way it is being presented it will fail, or at least not succeed to the level it could or more importantly should. To fully understand why you have to look at how the women are presented in NXT and how that enabled them to get over to the level that they did, and then look at how they are being presented in WWE and consider if that will also allow them to get over to that same level.

In NXT they are women wrestlers, they are competing for the NXT Women's Championship; a title belt that looks credible (actually better than the Men's Title in my opinion) and therefore can be respected. We were never told that the women were going to be taken seriously or that they were going to have good matches and be respected. They were just presented on the show in a respectable light, allowed to focus on competing to be a champion, and given enough time to do a good job if they were able. The women worked hard, had good matches, were given good angles, and fans started to care, and they got over. It was in a sense Organic.

In WWE the women are "Divas" a term when used in any other industry is a derogatory term referring to stuck up bitchy women. They compete (occasionally) for the Diva's Title, which is a purple belt with a butterfly on it. At best this looks like a Barbie toy belt and at worst it's derogatory and offensive because of the female sexual euphemism for butterfly. The women in WWE need a new title belt to compete for and in all honesty it needs to be renamed the WWE Women's World Title.

Furthermore coming out and telling us there is a Diva's Revolution and the women are going to be good and important now, was a big mistake. Don't tell us it's going to be good, just let it be good and we will come to that conclusion all on our own, like we did with NXT. Also in NXT each woman was given her turn to be focused on and chase the title. This allowed us to get behind them and follow their journey and struggle, while keeping the focus on becoming Champion. In WWE we are getting 3 groups of 3, which makes it near impossible to focus on the women individually and form an attachment to any of them and it has completely removed the focus on the title and being a champion.

In NXT the women got over one at a time. Paige won the first NXT Women's Title Tournament in a really good match with Emma, which started the ball rolling. When Paige got called up, she was stripped of the title and another tournament was held. Charlotte won this tournament in an awesome match with Nattie, to set her up and get her over. Sasha was then pushed and focused on and she got over, with Becky in a secondary role. Baylee was used to get Charlotte and Sasha over while building her own underdog status. Becky then got the focus and the push and she got over huge even in losing her title challenge (an amazing accomplishment). The long slow build was then finally paid off with Baylee in Brooklyn and we all saw what a great reaction she got winning the title.

Since the start of the Diva's revolution on RAW the title has not been the focus at all. PCB are faces, Team BAD are heels, and Team Bella float back and forth. All are getting wins and losses, no one is moving forwards or backwards and no individual is getting focus on directly. We are constantly being told it's a new era, but to be honest we are just getting slightly longer, slightly better matches, with a few new faces.

When the crowd on RAW in Brooklyn turned on the women's match it wasn't the fault of the crowd nor the fault of the women, it was the way it was presented. In the promo to set up the match Nikki Bella actually said that wins and losses didn't matter and that these muti-diva matches are pointless. She said the only thing that mattered was the Diva's Title and how she will soon be the longest reigning Diva's Champ of all time. How can anyone be surprised or angry that the crowd gave up on the match that followed when they were flat out told before it started that it didn't matter? Furthermore how can we care about Nikki's long title reign when I doubt anyone even remember the last time she defended it?

I do remember both Sasha and Charlotte making Nikki tap out to win tag matches, a fact that wasn't focus on, nor did it earn them a title match. To get this thing over you have to completely overhaul the way in which it is presented, like they did in NXT. You must focus on each woman in turn with a constant focus on the Championship. Unfortunately because they also have to focus on and promote Total Divas, they have to focus on a large group of women, in particularly the Bellas, so this may be impossible. The Bellas have improved a ton over the last couple years and they are more than capable of having good matches, but in my opinion as long as they are being focused on, this will never feel new."

That is from Lance Storm. Absolutely perfect and is something that WWE desperately needs to take note of. Never liked it being the Diva's title either and it does look shit. The NXT title shouldn't look miles better than the main women's title on the main roster. So much they need to overhaul and it really wouldn't take that much to do it either.
