The last DVD set WWE released about Savage, Macho Madness was a fine compendium of his matches but was missing a documentary. They have eradicated that with a new DVD that's just been released. But from the beginning its very odd. It starts with the "Jeep" logo which starts spinning, and as the camera pans out its of an alloy wheel and tyre that is picking up speed. Then it finally screeches to a halt and they cut to news reports of Savage's death. What a strange decision to re-enact his death and a little bit distasteful. The documentary is pretty good albeit somewhat glossed over. There are a few gaping holes of periods that are not covered. The whole run as Macho King isn't mentioned, Retirement Match with Warrior or feuds with Flair & Jakes Roberts. They seemed more interested in bringing up his jealousy over Liz being recanted by Jerry Lawler & Lex Luger who weren't even there. Vince McMahon isn't a talking head which gives some gravitas to how their tumultuous their relationship must have become. There are Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, Lanny Poffo and a load more talking heads which have been in Savage's career in one way or another. But they don't go into much detail about their matches or anecdotes. Its more, "yeah he was a good wrestler", "yeah, he was in the top 5 for promo's." The only one that does give some insight is Ricky Steamboat and thats on their WM3 match and how it was set out. Obviously the big problem is that there is no Savage to speak for himself and they rely on a 1993 interview and his brother to talk for him. Unlike the Warrior DVD, where you see him coming back and meeting Vince & Triple H and he gets to tell his own story, then he passes away. There you felt that the bridge had been fixed and everyone was on good terms. Not to say Savage wasn't happy because he did marry his childhood sweetheart and they were happy but as a wrestling fan, you wanted him to expunge the beef with Vince. It's a decent watch and the matches on the other discs are all new and different from the previous release. But with the 90 minutes they had, I thought they could have made it more detailed and less choppy.
