Louis van Gaal has been named as the new Manchester United manager, with Ryan Giggs working as his assistant.

Van Gaal, 62, has signed a three-year contract to succeed David Moyes.

The Dutchman, who has won titles with Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ Alkmaar, will take charge at Old Trafford after leading the Netherlands at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

"This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history," said Van Gaal.

Now that it's official, they can work on bringing new guys into the club. I expect a huge summer from United. Realstically, they need to sign at least three defenders. And I'd say at least two midfielders too.

I wonder if Fellaini will stay or not. He had a terrible season, not a single assist, goal or even through ball all season. That's as bad as it gets. So he could be on his way out but saying that, I still think he can have a decent time at United if given a second chance.

The only part of the pitch I think they are relatively decent is up front. Van Persie, Rooney and Welbeck should be good enough as long as  they put some decent midfielders behind them.

Goalkeepers and striker wise, they are still one of the best.

With Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra off though, that's a massive chunk of their defence gone. Massive experience that needs to be replaced, and they definitely need a left back.

Midfield could be better, could be a lot better really... but their main concern right now has to be the key departures in defence. Probably one midfielder coming in would be good, and see if they can lift the games of the other mediocre midfield players around him.

Good appointment really though. Shame it's not a younger manager who can realistically be there long term, but that's not how the game is run these days. A good manager who should help them get back near the top next season with the right signings.

Lol you get so touchy.

Seriously though I think United will get CL football next season and order will be restored.

I get so touchy cos you say silly things with such conviction, i'd admire it if it wasn't so frustrating.

Van Gaal winning the title isn't what United fans should think about, its who he doesn't get on with. I expect Rooney to get the trademark Van Gaal stare during the season when he's playing shit and a load more players becoming alienated.

Rhys, I'm with Jek. Rubbish prediction considering Arsenal just got a gorilla off their back, if any club should be worried then its Chelsea. Senior players leaving, influx of young players coming and pressure on Mourinho after a trophyless season... Could be a long season for us. Then again, Man City with their sanctions could be affected or Liverpool, with their small squad and style which was a breath of fresh air but will be heavily prepared for this upcoming season could be troubled.

But of the big guns, Chelsea is the one in trouble I think.

Im sure Arsenal will do fine really. They'll get CL football. I just dont think Man Utd's down fall is as bad as people think.

Moyes was a mistake but I think if they bring in the signings we expect from United they will recover next season. Every team at the top has a bad spell. Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool have all had bad spells.  United's just seems worse because they've been so successful for so long.

Word is Cesc Fabregas is top of their list as well as Shaw from Southampton. Both of them would be a good start on the road to recovery.

United's problem is that their squad isn't very good. Ferguson was great at getting 100% out of a weak squad. He did it in 2012-13, they won that title comfortably despite being pretty poor all year. Moyes wasn't the guy to take over, not without signing a lot more great players. Maybe Martinez, he's proven that he can keep Wigan up despite the odds for, what, five years? And now he's done wonders with Everton despite losing Fellaini, their key player the previous season. I don't know Van Gaal very well at all, but without signing some better players he's going to be lucky to gain much ground on this year's big four.

Side note, when will any United boss realise that Phil Jones isn't very good?

I like Jones. What they need to do though is just stick him in central defence and leave him there. Moving him about all over the place is doing more harm that good as he's not really learning a position.

His positioning is terrible for a CB, the reason why they play him all over the place is because he is naturally all over the place. He reminds me of my ex a bit, she didn't know her place either.

David Luiz too. He was a liability as a centre back so they started pushing him forward.

Speaking of Luiz, I'm glad Chelsea are biting PSG's hand off and shipping him to Paris. £50 million means a £30 million profit and one of my favourite players playing in a more free system on the continent, where his style is appreciated more.

Evra has signed a new one year deal. I think LVG should start afresh and build a whole new back four with younger players. Have Smalling & Jones as back-up so they can develop better for the future. But spend some money on quality defenders.
