So saying half-cast is racist? Really?

It's weird that coloured is on there, but my girl and her family all refer to themselves as coloured as they are mixed race.  Apparently, it's not racist to say coloured in africa (my girl and her family are originally from Zimbabwe and have lived in South Africa as well).

I think us white people get so afraid of offending people we don't listen to the people we are trying to offend.

EDIT- Meant "trying not to offend"...  Makes more sense now...

I would have thought coloured is more of a racist term than half-cast, I wouldn't say coloured to a person of a different race just in case, but half cast? I say that all the time, and I've never been called out on it. It's just a word to describe someone of mixed race, I thought.

I don't refer to my girl as coloured.  I think of her as black, and she gets more pissed at that than anything else!  Called her black once (not in a racist way...) and she threatened to hit me!  She's coloured and proud of it.  Just a do gooder back in the day decided it was derogatory and no one should say it.

Half cast sounds racist to me Rhys.  Not sure why tho.  Having said that, you are in Wales, and you're all pretty backwards and slow there.  Maybe in another 30 or 40 years you'll catch up with the rest of the world...

I think we can all agree there's so many different forms of "racist" terms that they've all been considered racist at one point or another so maybe Liverpool have the right idea just banning them all. It's stupid, but it stops people from getting offended I guess.

Isn't liverpool assuming their fans dont know these words are offensive quite offecsive to liverpool fans...  The club is basically saying "we know you're all a little dim from singling beatles songs all day and constantly perming your hair, so these are some naughty words you shouldnt say"

I had an incident a little while ago where a male was reffered to as being coloured, and they kicked off saying that he was Black not coloured.

Sometimes you worry too much about what wont offend, that no matter what you can be offensive..

Oh, I just realised handicapped is on the list! What?! I've heard people in wheelchairs say that they are "handicapped" so how is that possible an offensive term?

Its when you say it to someone who isn't handicapped.  So if I called belly handicapped it would be offensive.  But only because I didn't prefix "mentally" before the word

Half Caste is racist because it means half a person supposedly. It's what I've been told by mix race people and older Caribbeans where I think the term came from. I don't like the term coloured because it essentially separates white people from everyone else, it's a term that supports segregation.

It's a weird one. Some prefer being called coloured while others prefer black, but I've always thought black is the correct term since that's what they are. Just like we're white. Saying "coloured" suggests that white people aren't coloured, when we are. So I can understand why coloured is considered racist.

Half Cast, well I guess people could take it that way but I find it odd if they did. I've never met a person of mixed race who was offended by being called half-cast, most of them say themselves that their half-cast, so it's weird.

But like I said earlier, so many people have so many different words they find offensive saying any of it is considered offensive to someone out there.

I think the main reason Half-Caste is seen as offensive is because it's quite an old fashioned term to use. Same as calling the gays queer.

I'm really surprised Rhys and Jek are unaware of half-caste. Not necessarily your fault I guess, it should be taught in schools since it's pretty basic stuff. A caste is a social class in India, mostly in Hinduism. People are only supposed to marry within their own caste, so it was considered shameful to be a mix of two, or half-caste. It's nothing to do with being mixed race at all, at least it isn't supposed to be, since both "halves" would be Indian anyway.

Coloured is just an old fashioned term. A lot of people use it, black people included, but that doesn't really make it ok. Black people are black now, it's ok to say that, whereas a term from the racist 60s makes you sound like you're behind the times. I doubt it's a major problem but it's probably best to avoid it, just to be sure.

Anyway. I love that lady-boy is on there twice. Bit confused about what to say when talking about Robert...well, you know, Iron Man.

Horaay for RE lessons!  I've noticed that half-caste is used a lot in Wales and very casually, but without malicious intent behind it.  My cousin uses it all the time (and she wouldn't hurt a fly), and I have to admit that I don't really like the term.  I don't get offended, but I can see why people who do feel that way.

Hilds is right though, Wales is a bit behind the times 😋.  It always feels like I'm going back in time the further north and west I go.
