WCW
I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of some Monday Night Wars WCW wrestling. Why? Bc I was a WWF guy through and through and didn’t get to see much of actual WCW wrestling. Having been watching some shows and matches.......the upper card and main event 1000% had the name recognition for sure. Sting/Hogan/Flair/Nash/Savage/Hall/Luger(Hate Luger) and Goldberg/Hart later.
But my god were those matches some of the most clunky, botched, silly, and dumb matches and finishes I’ve ever seen.
Look I know certain names and gimmicks were larger then life, but if you weren’t watching Guerrero and Mysterio. Those matches were absolute ass and even the ring look too small for the big guys! IDK. Maybe it’s just me......
WWF wasn’t perfect. Guys like the Goon and the dude with the Buffalo head were super dumb. But Comparing the two shows, the WWF production value and in ring performances (particularly in the main event) were just no match. Different times I guess but looking back on it now......just wow. I just watched Goldberg and Hall and the first move was suppose to be a clothesline but the damn ring is so small, so they just kinda collide and Hall goes down. The whole match is about 5 mins and it’s for the TV title. Every other major match ends in an interference........just ugly

Main Event · 977 commentsI think watching WCW now would be a mistake. Well, it also depends on which era of WCW you watch as well. I enjoyed wrestling so much when I was younger that I never thought of bits as being shit. Young and less critical of the world as I didn't know any better, I was one of those that tuned into WCW a lot, as well as WWF. It was entertaining. I've watched some bits back since and yeah, there was some real shit going on that as an adult I wouldn't continue watching.
WCW, before they brought in people like Hogan, was a much better product, so would recommend checking that out if you're going to watch any WCW. They gave him and others far too much power and say and you ended up with storylines that were shit and suited them instead of the company. Old guys as well that were no longer in their prime and it lost that bit of magic. They also started getting really stupid finishes to matches just to be edgy I think and that hurt them a lot. WCW was the prime reason people had a problem with where TNA was heading at one point (apart from the younger fans who didn't really know WCW, although I believe the reasoning is still the same), as both started going for name recognition over the product and we all saw how that turned out for WCW - it's not sustainable, financially or entertainment-wise.
WCW at its height was a really good competition for WWE and could be just as, if not more at times, entertaining. It's a shame they ruined it when they had a good thing going. Whether that was greed, getting ahead of themselves, giving power to the wrong people, wrong priorities (name-value over everything else), who knows, but they had a really good period before it went to shit. Sadly, everyone who watched WCW will remember how it ended as that's the last impression of the company for most.
Can't say I've ever noticed that the ring was smaller, but it has been a while since I've gone back and watched any WCW. I think the last WCW match I watched was on an old tape I had where the main event was Buff Bagwell vs Kevin Nash. That had one of my favourite chair spots in it where Nash set two chairs up facing each other, then laid another chair on top of them before powerbombing Bagwell through them. That was great. I really miss the good old days where chairs in wrestling meant something lol.
But yeah man, if you're going to check out WCW to see why the Monday Night Wars happened, check out the bits before they starting destroying themselves. I know there was a Best Of series of DVDs for it, but I never checked them out to see what someone thought was "the best".

Admin · 3,242 commentsI can't remember much of WCW, but watched it weekly when I was younger. Was good at the time. Although whatever local channel it was on during the day was a rerun of it and they did the classic cartoony "BAM" over the screen whenever a weapon was used to hide that it had happened... Presumably for TV rights during the day... Because you know, powerbombing and clotheslinijg people is okay, but dropping them on a table is not. I remember that more than I do anything that actually happened.

Main Event · 977 commentsAh man, I remember that. Channel 5 I think it was that aired WCW repays on a weekend morning. They really hated showing chair shots and the like, and for some reason made it comical by adding the noise text over it like they did on the Adam West Batman series.
Looking back on it, I think I watched WCW more than WWE because at the time it was more accessible to me. It was shown on terrestrial TV and I didn't need something like Sky Sports to watch it. I don't miss WCW though just because the last bits of it were a hot mess with, as LHeat87 says, interference galore. Sadly that was the last, and so lasting, impression of the company.

Main Event · 798 commentsWell you guys are totally right about being young and really not knowing any better. Looking at their biggest Starcade and Main Event probably ever with Hogan and Sting and they completely botch the "fast" count. Just unreal

Main Event · 977 commentsDefinitely check out some of their stuff before Hogan. Not saying he was the downfall of WCW, but he kinda was. They did do some really good events though that you'd enjoy. If you focus on the end, all you'll see is why they went out of business. Check out the before then parts, back when they were going for an alternative product and everyone looked like they were having fun.
I view it the same as I do TNA. You look back at some of their old events and they were a wrestling fans dream, whereas the later stuff you had some good bits but also a lot of shit as they made the same mistake WCW did with going for name value over what they can actually do. The older TNA events were great, and that's how I feel it is with WCW.

Main Event · 798 commentsThat’s a valid point. Maybe I’ll go back even further. You figure the “Monday Night Wars” would produce the best, but it was all the NWO gimmick/storylines and not much else in the main event lol

TNA circa 2002-2006 was a fantastic product for the most part, but especially 2003-2005
