The Moon Maiden

Hello, fellow 4W faithfuls! Welcome to Battle of the Bands! Each week, two musical acts (see note) will compete for your votes to become the BotB champion!

At BotB 36, internationally recognized food preparation Meat Loaf was narrowly edged out by crazed foodies with a taste for easy women and poor weather conditions—in other words, AC/DC! This edition of BotB marks the their first defense as the reigning champions.

When you vote, please request a musical act for the challenger list. Each act will be added to the list in the order they are requested. (Only one request at a time per person, please.) Battles will be usually be posted on Mondays, with the voting period lasting for about one week. I will try to post a heads-up as voting nears an end. When a band loses, it will be unable to re-challenge for 10 rounds. For the sake of variety, I'm adding the stipulation that if an act achieves 10 straight victories, they will be retired from champion status and the next two challengers in the request list will duke it out for supremacy!

Note: The term "musical act" denotes any band, solo artist, vocal group... whatever you like. Basically, this is an all-inclusive popularity contest.

Voters are encouraged to include their opinions of the bands/artists in the battle, or at least a few short words about the act they voted for. Not a requirement, of course!

Let's get THUNNN-DA-STRUUUCK!!

AC/DC

AC/DC are an Australian rock band, formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. A hard rock/blues rock band, they have also been considered a heavy metal band, although they have always dubbed their music simply "rock and roll".

AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. Membership subsequently stabilised until bassist Mark Evans was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977 for the album Powerage. Within months of recording the album Highway to Hell, lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on 19 February 1980 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. The group considered disbanding, but buoyed by support from Scott's parents, decided to continue and set about finding a new vocalist. Ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson was auditioned and selected to replace Scott. Later that year, the band released the new album, Back in Black, which was made as a tribute to Bon Scott. The album launched them to new heights of success and became their all-time best-seller.

The band's next album, For Those About to Rock We Salute You, was their first album to reach number one in the United States. Drummer Phil Rudd was fired in 1983 and replaced by ex-A II Z drummer Simon Wright, who left to join Dio in 1989. The band experienced a resurgence in the early 1990s with the release of The Razors Edge. Phil Rudd returned in 1994 after Chris Slade, who was with the band from 1989 to 1994, was asked to leave in favour of him, and contributed to the band's 1995 album Ballbreaker. Stiff Upper Lip, released in 2000, was well received by critics. The band's studio album, Black Ice, released in 2008, was the second-highest-selling album of that year, and their biggest chart hit since For Those About to Rock, eventually reaching No.1 on all charts worldwide. The band's line-up remained the same until 2014 with Malcolm Young's retirement due to early-onset dementia and Rudd's legal troubles. In 2016, Johnson was advised to stop touring on account of worsening hearing loss and Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose stepped in as the band's vocalist for the remainder of that year's dates. Long-term bass player Cliff Williams retired from the band at the end of their 2016 Rock Or Bust world tour.

AC/DC have sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 71.5 million albums in the United States, adding them to the list of highest-certified music artists in the United States and the list of best-selling music artists. Back in Black has sold an estimated 50 million units worldwide, making it the second-highest-selling album by any artist – and the highest-selling album by any band. The album has sold 22 million units in the US, where it is the sixth-highest-selling album of all time. AC/DC ranked fourth on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and were named the seventh "Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time" by MTV. In 2004, AC/DC ranked No. 72 on the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". Producer Rick Rubin, who wrote an essay on the band for the Rolling Stone list, referred to AC/DC as "the greatest rock and roll band of all time". In 2010, AC/DC were ranked number 23 in the VH1 list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

Nightwish

Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. The band soon picked up drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and then bassist Sami Vänskä after the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First (1997). In 2001, Vänskä was replaced by Marco Hietala, who also took over the male vocalist role previously filled by Holopainen or guest singers.

Although Nightwish have been prominent in their home country since Angels Fall First, they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000) and Century Child (2002). Their 2004 album, Once, has sold more than one million copies and was the band's breakthrough in the United States. Their biggest US hit single, "Wish I Had an Angel" (2004), received MTV airplay and was included on three US film soundtracks to promote their North American tour. The band produced three more singles and two music videos for Once, as well as a re-recording of "Sleeping Sun" for the "Best of Nightwish" compilation album, Highest Hopes (2005), before Turunen's dismissal in October 2005. Her last performance with Nightwish was during a concert recorded for the live album/DVD End of an Era. After the concert, the other members informed Turunen with an open letter that she was no longer a member of Nightwish.

In May 2007, Nightwish announced Anette Olzon as Turunen's replacement. That September, the band released their sixth album, Dark Passion Play, which has sold almost 2 million copies. The album's lead single, "Amaranth", became one of Nightwish's most successful in Europe. The supporting tour, one of the band's largest, started on October 6, 2007 and ended on September 19, 2009. The band released an EP/live album, Made in Hong Kong (And in Various Other Places), in March 2009 as a CD/DVD, and their seventh studio album, Imaginaerum, was released globally on various days in late 2011/early 2012.

On October 1, 2012, Nightwish announced that they had parted ways with Olzon and would be finishing the tour with ReVamp and former After Forever vocalist Floor Jansen. In October 2013, Nightwish made Jansen and longtime session uillean pipes player Troy Donockley permanent members of the band, and they were featured in the acclaimed album Endless Forms Most Beautiful, released on March 27, 2015.

Nightwish is the third-best-selling band and musical entity in Finland with certified sales of nearly 900,000 certified copies. The group is also the most successful Finnish band worldwide, selling more than 9 million records and receiving more than 60 gold and platinum awards, having released five Number 1 albums and thirteen Number 1 singles.

It's gotta be AC/DC for me. I like Nightwish, but I never particularly enjoyed Turunens vocals. They were also idiotic in how they handled Olzen IMO as she was fantastic and Dark Passion Play continues to be a favourite album of mine.

AC/DC for me have just been far more consistent and they tend to keep out of the band politics that Tuomos Holopainen seems to revel in....

Nightwish are fine. But I couldn't name more than a couple songs. It's AC/DC for me.

My vote goes to Nightwish. I've already spoken on AC/DC, so I'll cover the band I just voted for. I'm not their biggest fan or anything, but the material I do enjoy, I enjoy a great deal. They were my introduction to symphonic metal and helped open me up to a world of very cool music. Like many folks say, I find Tarja a bit over-the-top/grating. I liked Annette with them, and the Marco-fronted ballads "The Islander" and "While Your Lips Are Still Red" are amongst my favorite ballads of all-time. Don't know the stuff with Floor, but Elan seemed like a decent song, as I recall. So.... yeah. Bombastic, inconsistent, charismatic, overdramatic, romantic/thoughtful in places... sound about right, folks? Nightwish is like a lovely, though poorly-organized masquerade for a spoiled heiress with impossible expectations. By the end of the night, emotions will have run high, and mascara may have run low, over one's tear-stained cheeks... but you'll probably have had a fairly emtertaining and lastingly memorable time, overall.

Thanks for including some input with your votes! Benjawi, would you like to request a future challenger?

As an aside: everyone's been saying "Meatloaf", but actually, there's supposed to be a space in his name: Meat Loaf. Literally everyone who voted for him wrote it as one word, I believe. Strikes me as odd.
