Avantasia are a hit-or-miss kinda band for me. Tobias and co. have occasionally struck me as lost in time, more than space—do forgive my lame joke, please! Starting around this point in time (2008), things shifted away from the core sound somewhat. A lot of the music is bombastic in an almost '80s cock-rock kinda way, mixed into some straight-forward power metal tropes. They had prior fit in more with classic German acts like Helloween, Blind Guardian, etc. Also, of course, with the rest of the emerging symphonic metal scene. Something about Avantasia's approach at this time, and on this song, sticks out like a sore thumb. Some material is solid, but other times they grate on me, or just disappoint me. Why the latter? Because Tobias already has a far superior line-up for that, in Edguy. Sure, his natural persona and influences are gonna bleed over in places, but the two projects were much more vastly distinct in their early days. Edguy were the over-the-top cock-rock metal dudes that teetered between epic cheese and glam cheese. For the newcomer/uninitiated to Edguy—just imagine that the Steel Panther guys fucked the classic Helloween line-up. Musically. Not literally. Anyway, Avantasia used to represent the other side of that bombast, with their glorious metal opera gimmick and hungry energy. By the way, if you're seeking amazing power metal cheese done right, you need some Freedom Call in your life!
Uh... oh, yeah! The song. It's about as standard as a metal ballad gets. This could be anyone's song, really. Harmless background noise. I do like Amanda Somerville's backing vocals on the bridge. 5.5 out of 10. My request is "Scream of the Butterfly" by Acid Bath.
