Thanks to a new toy line, there's speculation that WWE is about to launch a new gimmick match - the crash cage. Normally people wouldn't pay attention to toys as they usually come up with some crazy shit to keep kids entertained. But, this one has "Watch the WWE Crash Cage come to life at NXT:TAKEOVER!" on the box, which makes it a bit different.

I'm still trying to work out what the hell is going on on the box cover. How does a cage come in to play? Cage Crash? So they're going to crash the cage, with someone inside it, into something? Sounds real safe...

If it is going to be a think, it'll be interesting to find out what it's actually about as just that box alone leaves an awful lot of questions.

Well, to begin with, the cage seems to be hanging from a crane.... I genuinely can't think of a reason for this to be in a competitive match up unless they were gonna do something akin to a ladder match, except that it's a person hanging from the roof rather than a belt or contract....

Seems like you could have the champion in a cage above the ring and have however many people go at it for a certain amount of time and make it elimination rules.  By the time the champ enters, whoever is left is left.  You could go several ways with angles just on that idea alone.  And that idea is a shitty idea.  I just wonder what they have in store for us!

It looks like the cage they had in WCW where usually the manager was put in and then the crane lifts them up so they can't interfere...

This sounds like a weird take on the X division matches from TNA...There's no way they can make someone crashing 15ft or so from a cage safe though. The only thing I can think of is they will have the cage on display in life size form at one of the Takeover events, I would be very surprised if this became and actual match.

Guess we've found out where the cage comes in to play then, on NXT last night they stated that Paul Ellering will be suspended above the ring in a shark cage at Takeover to even the odds in the final of the DRTTC. Should be interesting to say the least.

So he gets caged up instead of just barred from ringside?

From what I can gather, yeah.

Yeah, but again this kind of match has been done before I'm positive it was in WCW. The only difference was the cage was suspended outside the ring not above it.

I just realized that this has direct correlation to the Last Battle of Atlanta.  In that match it was Tommy Rich vs. Buzz Sawyer with Paul Ellering suspended above the ring in a similar cage.  The stipulation was that if Tommy Rich won, he would get 5 minutes in the ring with Ellering.  He did, of course, and they ended up kind of having a whole other match after his 10 minute brawl with Buzz.

Ellering recently found the lost footage of the match, which was talked about here in 4w as well!

He then appeared on NXT pretty much right around the same time as this footage was released and builds his first angle to this story.  It's a rushed re-hash of his story from the 80's with a tag team instead of a singles guy.

Pretty cool to see it happen, he has only become active in helping his team win matches during the tournament.  I just hope that he doesn't eventually leave the Authors of Pain after this angle or anytime soon.  I hope to see him actually make an impact and cut more promos, maybe even expand his clientele to other wrestlers and maybe even other brands!

And the toy has been out for awhile now. This is just the internet making it out to be something big that's not.
