Nice. Pretty cool. They loved themselves some covers...Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Neil Young especially. They were pioneers of the idea to cover songs of other current (and supposedly feuding) artists I believe.
Phish is currently following pretty well in their footsteps. They just debuted at Wrigley Field in Chicago, a gigantic and very historic (for us! haha) baseball field for the Chicago Cubs. That's a big deal...similar to the way that the Grateful Dead would play in big football stadiums (the size of where current WrestleManias are held) in the late 80's and early 90's on a nightly basis for up to 100 shows a year.
Huge fan of the Grateful Dead. They certainly are one of the five most influential bands in the history of rock to me. Not sure of who the other four would be, but they would be on that level for sure.
This is pretty cool. A 3 volume album of covers featuring songs from the Grateful Dead. Created by the Dessner brothers from the band, The National. There's 59 covers from a plethora of bands from different genres.
