This was the summer that Nexus basically took over the WWE and feuded with John Cena. Probably one of the most interesting angles in years at this point. Also this was when Michael Cole was first starting to debut his new heel persona and a man crush on the Miz. This is Night of Champions, so many title matches tonight! Here we go!
Dolph Ziggler (c) (with Vickie Guerrero and Kaitlyn) defeated Kofi Kingston - They gave these guys a lot of time to kick off the show. This was for the IC Championship and the stipulation was if Dolph got counted out or DQed he would lose the title. So Kingston and Ziggler open the show with a bang. They really do work well with each other. They had enough time to build the match. Just one quick note here, Matt Striker is on the announcing team, and the other announcers do not seem to like him at all! So Ziggler has to prevent Vickie from interfering in the match so he doesn't get DQed then turns around ducks Kofi's spinning kick thing, and hits the Zig Zag for the win. Good way to get the show started. I miss Ziggler's trunks, he doesn't look right in tights. Just sayin.
Big Show defeated CM Punk - Non title match here and very short match. I would wonder why this should even be on the card, but CM Punk needs to be on this card some how I guess, they are in Chicago. This isn't that good of a match. They probably could have done a better job if they were given more than four minutes. Punk does hit a awesome spot where Big Show is laying on the outside of the ring and Punk slingshots from inside of the ring to the outside of the ring and hits a senton. That was awesome. The only real good part of the match. Big Show wins with the KO Punch. Man I hate that finisher. Sad that CM Punk couldn't have atleast been in the championship match.
Daniel Bryan defeated The Miz (c) (with Alex Riley) by submission - This was for the United State championship. I'm sure everyone knows the storyline by now. Daniel Bryan thought he shouldnt be Miz's rookie in NXT, Miz thinks Daniel Bryan isn't entertaining, blah blah blah. Michael Cole also just puts over Miz constantly with his commentary and its kind of distracting at times. He takes every opportunity to bury Bryan too. Anyways, this was a really good match from these two men. Very surprising from the Miz, he really can put out some quality matches though with the right people. Daniel Bryan wins with the crossface and we have a new champion! Its nice going back and seeing Daniel Bryan's start in the WWE basically. This was his first title he won and this was a hot feud. He's always seemed to be in high profile angles now that I look back upon it. So YES! YES! YES! I was happy to see Bryan win. Very solid match up.
Michelle McCool (self-proclaimed co-Women's Champion) defeated Melina (Divas Champion) - This was a lumberjil match to unify the Womens and Divas titles. Does anyone else really miss Melina's entrance? Also I never realized how great her theme music was, it just feels kind of intense when she comes out. Anyways, these two are pretty solid workers, and now have basically been forgotten in WWE history like alot of divas have. But this wasn't really that great of a match, I don't see the need for the lumberjills really either. If given more time they probably could have put on a heck of a show. So Michelle wins and becomes the sole champ. Well "co" champ, that was the angle she was having with Layla at that time. I don't remember if Melina did anything after this.
Kane (c) defeated The Undertaker - I didn't mind Kane's last title run, it wasn't terrible, and after all the crap they have put him through over the years he deserved it. But he didn't need another feud with the Undertaker. This match up since it features two good workers and they have been around for a long time, you would expect it to be a really good match. Instead what we got is a slow drawn up way to long match. If I remember correctly, Kane and Taker never have really had great chemistry in the ring when wrestling each other. This match was no holds barred to by the way. They did the brawling through the crowd thing and again it was slow and painful. But they got back to the ring and the thing that sticks out is that Kane hit a tombstone on Taker and won the match cleanly! So that was a big change of pace and a good rub for Kane to win clean. Disappointing match.
Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre last eliminated Evan Bourne and Mark Henry to win - This was for the tag team titles and was actually a tag team turmoil match. The WWE tag division was pretty weak here too, a running theme in the WWE for years at this point. So you have The Usos (who weren't ever used at this point), Santino and Vladimir Kozlov (it was a thing..), Evan Bourne and Mark Henry, and Rhodes and McIntyre. Out of those four you only have one real tag team. This match was boring. Not fun at all and I've totally forgotten about all these teams apart from the Usos now here in 2016. McIntyre and Rhodes are such a random pair too. They win and I cant for the life of me tell you what they did afterwards. I think this was during the "dashing" Cody Rhodes era too, that was awesome I must admit. Bummer.
Randy Orton defeated Sheamus (c), Wade Barrett, John Cena, Edge and Chris Jerich - Alright now time for the main event for the WWE Championship. This was billed as a six pack challenge match. Its basically a six man elimination match. This match didn't disappoint it was full of awesome offense. Has Sheamus ever had a strong WWE Championship run? I know he had a strong World Heavyweight Championship run once. Anyways Jericho gets eliminated quickly and the action stops as everyone watches him make the walk of shame down the isle. I thought that was pretty funny, but being a Jericho fan you have to feel sad. The next man eliminated is Edge by a FU by John Cena. I'm not sure when they started calling it the attitude adjustment to be honest. A little while later Nexus makes a run in and it leads to Barret hitting the Wasteland and pinning Cena. So Barret gets to eliminate Cena thats good stuff. Nexus turns their attention on Orton and beat him up, Cena drives them out with a chair on his way out and Orton comes back and finishes off Barret with a RKO! Poor Wade, you got to wonder how different his career would be if the WWE would have taken a chance on him. Sheamus and Orton are left and Orton finishes him off with a RKO to become the new champion. Pretty fun match here, I liked it. But I can't rememeber alot from this year, I don't know why. Orton's reign seems so forgettable to me.
So this show wasn't good, it was pretty forgettable, aside from the Daniel Bryan match. We had a few decent matches, but everything else was pretty bad and stunk up the place. Which is a shame because usually Night of Champions was one of the better PPVs of the year on a yearly basis. Oh well.
