Battle of the Bands 28
Rules are simple. Two bands (or any artist; doesn't necessarily have to be a band) battle it out. You vote for the better band. Winner stays on. Request bands (only one request at a time per person) and they'll go into the challenger list. Each battle will last three days (roughly). Once a band loses, it will be unable to re-challenge for 10 rounds.

Nirvana was an American rock band formed by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined in 1990. Despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven-year career, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important alternative bands in history. Though the band dissolved in 1994 after the suicide of Cobain, their music maintains a popular following and continues to influence modern rock and roll culture.
In the late 1980s, Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album, Bleach, for the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. They developed a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC Records, Nirvana found unexpected success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the first single from the band's second album Nevermind (1991). Nirvana's sudden success widely popularized alternative rock, and Cobain found himself referred to in the media as the "spokesman of a generation", with Nirvana considered the "flagship band" of Generation X. Nirvana's third studio album, In Utero (1993), released to critical acclaim, featured an abrasive, less mainstream sound and challenged the group's audience.
Nirvana's active career ended following the death of Cobain in 1994, but various posthumous releases have been issued since, overseen by Novoselic, Grohl, and Cobain's widow Courtney Love. Since its debut, the band has sold over 25 million records in the United States alone, and over 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, in its first year of eligibility.
VERSUS
DOKKEN
Dokken is an American metal band formed in 1979. They split up in 1989 and reformed four years later. They had three charting singles ("Alone Again", "In My Dreams" and "Burning Like a Flame") and have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. Beast from the East was nominated for the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1989.
The classic Dokken line-up consisted of founder Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Mick Brown on drums and Jeff Pilson, who replaced the Ratt-bound Juan Croucier in early 1984, on bass, This line-up remained stable from 1984 to 1989, and again from 1993 to 1997; only Dokken and Brown now remain. After several personnel changes on guitar, Dokken's attorney Jon Levin stepped in to fill the role in 2004. In 2001, Barry Sparks replaced Pilson on bass. In 2009, Sean McNabb (formerly with Great White and Quiet Riot) replaced him, and was then replaced by Chris McCarvill in 2015.

The Moon Maiden · 654 commentsNirvana, for sure. Dokken are/were (dunno or care what they sound like now) an okay hair metal band at best, and that's about it. They're inherently limited by their genre, which was basically played-out as soon as it began. More-to-the-point, regarding this battle: they are utterly outclassed by a 3-piece garage band in denim and flannel. Come on, it's Nirvana! Tighter musicians; smarter songwriters; seemingly adaptable (based on the brilliant MTV Unplugged performance) and a longstanding musical and cultural influence that's still felt today. I'll say more: meatier riffs/tones, bitchin' basslines, captivating drumwork (Grohl era, at least) AND a killer clean guitar tone? All the way back to Bleach, even. You know you're in a pop metal band when some scruffy Seattle garage rocker (who only just turned legal drinking age) is cranking out more metal riffs than your well-established label act that's 4 albums in. Mind, Dokken were split up for most of '89, but yeah.
